Specialty Contact Lenses

Regular contact lenses may not work for everyone. Instead, we do specialty contact lens fittings.

Standard contact lenses may not be the best option for everyone. In cases of keratoconus, dry eye, or other conditions in which a person is advised against wearing contact lenses, specialty contact lenses may be a suitable alternative.

Understanding Specialty Contact Lenses

Specialty contact lenses are designed for people who cannot wear standard contacts. They are used for various vision correction needs and are available in several types. Depending on an individual’s unique eye health needs, the specific type of specialty contact lens a person wears will vary.

Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lenses

Rigid gas permeable lenses, also known as RGP lenses, are firm, more durable than soft contact lenses, and provide sharper vision correction. They can last up to a year when properly cared for. One drawback to rigid gas lenses is that they can be difficult to adapt to for those new to wearing contact lenses.

Scleral Lenses

Scleral lenses, also a type of rigid gas lens, tend to be more comfortable than regular RGP lenses. They are larger and rest on the sclera, hence the name scleral lenses. The sclera is a less sensitive part of the eye than the cornea.

Ortho-K

Ortho-k lenses are special gas-permeable lenses that are used to reshape the cornea overnight. Worn exclusively at night during sleep, the lenses actively reshape the cornea, allowing a person to enjoy clear vision throughout the day without the need for the daily wear of contact lenses or eyeglasses. Ortho-K lenses are an ideal choice for those who would like an alternative to wearing corrective eyewear during the day. They are also a great option for those who do not wish to undergo laser corrective surgery.

Finding the Right Fit with Specialty Contact Lenses

At IDOC MEMBER Optometric, our doctors are experienced in not only determining what contact lenses are best for you, but they also will fit you for your specialty contact lenses to ensure comfort and efficacy.

If you are interested in contact lenses, our doctors will perform a contact lens exam. During this exam, they will evaluate a range of metrics and eye health markers, including the size and shape of your cornea. They will take into consideration your corrective vision needs and the overall health of your eyes. Upon gathering the information they need, our doctor will offer recommendations on specialty contact lenses that may be right for you, followed by a specialty contact lens fitting to ensure that your contacts rest correctly on your eyes.

If standard contact lenses are not a suitable option for you, specialty contacts may be a good alternative. Contact our eye care center in ANYTOWN AMERICA to schedule an appointment for your specialty contact lens consultation.
