Glaucoma is a serious eye condition that damages your optic nerve, which carries visual information from your eyes to your brain. If left untreated, glaucoma can lead to permanent vision loss.

At Southern Eye Centers, our eye doctor can detect early signs of glaucoma during a comprehensive eye exam. It is possible to manage glaucoma, but it must be diagnosed early. Eyesight lost to glaucoma cannot be restored.

Glaucoma diagnosis in Plaquemine, LA

Unfortunately, glaucoma often has no symptoms in the early stages, which is why it is often referred to as the “silent thief of sight.” Many people don’t know they have the condition until they’ve already experienced significant vision loss. Fortunately, Southern Eye Centers has optometrists trained in glaucoma diagnosis and treatment. We use state-of-the-art technology to detect glaucoma in its early stages. Once diagnosed, we create a customized treatment plan based on the patient’s needs and the severity of the disease.

Treatment for glaucoma

If you’re diagnosed with glaucoma, there are several treatment options available. Typically, glaucoma is caused by high eye pressure, also known as intraocular pressure. The goal of treatment is to lower intraocular pressure to prevent further damage to the optic nerve. At Southern Eye Centers, we use Digital Duet laser treatment to safely and effectively lower intraocular pressure and manage glaucoma.

Digital Duet laser treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that doesn’t require general anesthesia. During the procedure, our optometrist will use a specialized laser to target the ciliary body, which is responsible for producing the fluid inside the eye. Applying the laser to the ciliary body decreases fluid production in the eye and lowers eye pressure, which can slow down or even stop the progression of glaucoma.

At Southern Eye Centers, your eye health is our top priority. If you have any concerns or think you may be at risk of glaucoma, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with our team.
