LASIK Consultation & Co-Management

If you’re thinking about getting LASIK surgery, you will need a LASIK and refractive eye surgery consultation. During your consultation, we will inform and educate you about your treatment options and determine if refractive eye surgery is right for you.

At Southern Eye Centers in Baton Rouge, LA and Plaquemine, LA, we offer LASIK eye surgery consultations to help you determine if LASIK surgery is the right choice for you.

What is refractive eye surgery?

There are several types of refractive eye surgeries, but the most well-known is LASIK surgery. LASIK (Laser-Assisted in situ Keratomileusis) is a surgical procedure used to correct common vision problems such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism.

  • During LASIK surgery, a laser is used to reshape the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, so that it can focus light properly onto the retina at the back of the eye.
  • LASIK surgery involves creating a thin flap in the cornea using a microkeratome or a femtosecond laser. The flap is then lifted, and an excimer laser is used to remove a small amount of tissue from the cornea to reshape it. The flap is then carefully replaced, and the eye is allowed to heal naturally.
  • There are usually no side effects associated with this quick procedure, and patients experience only mild discomfort.

Your refractive eye surgery consultation

All refractive eye surgery consultations involve a comprehensive eye exam. During the exam, your doctor will evaluate your vision and eye health and assess your suitability for refractive eye surgery. To determine if you’re a good candidate for LASIK, we will assess your current prescription and other factors such as signs of eye disease. Your doctor will also need information about the shape and thickness of your cornea.

At Southern Eye Centers, you and your eye doctor will discuss your lifestyle and vision needs to determine the most appropriate procedure for you. We will also inform you of any risks or side effects as well as the cost, which varies based on the type of LASIK technology used.

Additional measurements will be taken during the pre-operative consultation to confirm suitability for surgery. During the consultation, you should feel free to ask any questions you have or express your concerns. Your doctor will answer your questions clearly and honestly. If you are an ideal candidate for refractive eye surgery, we will refer you to a trusted ophthalmologist in your area for continued treatment.

When you make an appointment at our office, please mention that you are interested in laser eye surgery. Our staff will then know to include a LASIK consultation as a part of your exam.
