Tips for Maintaining Good Vision as You Age

Sep 1, 2023

As we age, our bodies go through many changes, and this includes our eyesight. While these changes are a natural part of the aging process, there are steps that you can take to maintain good vision well into your golden years. Here are some tips to help you protect your eyes as you get older.

1. Schedule regular eye exams

Many eye conditions have no early warning signs or symptoms, so you may not even know you have them until vision loss occurs. Regular eye exams ensure that any potential problems are caught early and can be treated before they cause significant vision loss. If you have existing vision problems, make sure to schedule appointments more frequently to monitor any changes or adjustments needed to your eyeglasses or contact lenses

2. Wear sunglasses

Exposure to harmful UV rays can lead to cataracts, skin cancer, and even macular degeneration. By wearing sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays, you can protect your eyes from harmful radiation. Also, never stare at the sun directly, even when wearing sunglasses.

3. Take breaks from screen time

If you spend a lot of time staring at computer screens, it can lead to eye strain and headaches. To prevent this from happening, make sure to take regular breaks away from the computer. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a break and look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This will help rest your eyes and prevent them from tiring out.

4. Eat a balanced diet

A healthy diet is beneficial not only for your body but for your eyes as well. Essentially, your eyes require nutrients to function properly. By including foods such as leafy greens, fish, nuts, citrus fruits, and eggs in your diet, you can ensure that your eyes receive the necessary nutrients to stay healthy.

5. Quit smoking

Smoking is harmful to your overall health, including eye health. Studies have shown that smoking increases the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, and other eye conditions. If you smoke, quitting is one of the best things you can do to protect your eyes.

By taking a few simple steps to care for your eyes, you can help prevent age-related vision loss and enjoy clear vision for years to come.
