Dr. Roger F. Shaw, III
Dr. Roger Shaw earned his Bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of Houston in Houston, Texas and received his Doctorate of Optometry from the University of Houston College of Optometry. He has been a member of research and development teams for numerous contact lens companies, lectured nationally and internationally, and is a published author of articles for professional journals and a coauthor of the textbook The Fitting Guide for Contact Lenses.
Dr. Shaw has served as an adjunct professor with the University of Houston College of Optometry, Pennsylvania College of Optometry, and Southern College of Optometry. He has also served as the Chair of the American Optometry Association's Contact Lens Section and President of the New Orleans Contact Lens Society.
Dr. Ann Hardin Shaw
Dr. Ann Shaw earned her Bachelor's degree in International Business from the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia while also completing pre-medical course work. She received her Doctorate of Optometry from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Shaw completed externships at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Washington, D.C. and in Plano, Texas with D. Charles Shidlofsky, who specializes in vision care for autistic children and severely brain damaged patients.
Dr. Ann also holds a Master's Degree in Nutrition from Louisiana State University. She believes this degree will be extremely beneficial to her patients because modern nutritional research shows a strong correlation between personal nutrition and eye health, especially when dealing with macular degeneration. Dr. Ann is currently a member of the Optometric Nutrition Society.
Southern Eye Centers provide thorough eye health and vision examinations for glasses and contact lenses, as well as laser vision correction (LASIK) treatment and management. We examine your corneal and retinal health, treat dry eyes, eye injuries, macular degeneration and glaucoma, and diagnose cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and hypertension retinopathy.
Because of Dr. Roger Shaw’s extensive involvement with contact lens research and development for major contact lens companies, Southern Eye Centers attract hard-to-fit and special needs contact patients. We fit soft contact lenses, bifocal contact lenses, hard contact lenses, and specialty contact lenses such as keratoconus lenses. Contact lenses are considered a medical device, therefore they require a medical prescription. Contact lenses must be properly fitted and prescribed by an eye care professional.
It is highly recommended that patients undergo health and vision eye examinations yearly because many eye conditions may lead to permanent vision loss if not detected early. Our comprehensive exam varies depending on the age of the patient. We examine patients from less than one year old to elderly adults. Generally the examinations include the following:
- extensive medical history
- testing entrance vision
- visual screening (peripheral vision)
- assessment of muscle balance
- depth perception
- color vision
- ocular health (pictures of the retina are also available)
- refraction
- slit lamp examination (to examine the front of the eye)
- internal pressure of the eye
The Opticals at Southern Eye Centers offer designer frames and sunglasses as well as sports and safety glasses. See the Optical section for more details.
RTA
One of our newest instruments is the Retinal Thickness Analyzer (RTA). The RTA is an ophthalmic imaging device used for the mapping and quantitative measurement of retinal thickness and disc topography.
The RTA is able to detect the leading causes of irreversible blindness such as Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, and Age-Related Macular Degeneration. Early detection is important because many of these diseases do not present with signs or symptoms.
GDX
The GDX is a nerve fiber analyzer that is necessary for early detection of glaucoma. It is a non-obtrusive retinal scan that measures the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL). A change in the thickness of this nerve layer is an early risk factor for glaucoma.
CORNEAL TOPOGRAPHER
A corneal topographer is an instrument that is used to detect irregularities on the corneal surface. It is very useful when fitting contact lens patients with corneal conditions such as keratoconus or irregular astigmatisms. It is also used to determine if a patient is a candidate for LASIK.
CORNEAL PACHYMETRY
A corneal pachymetry is used to determine the corneal thickness of a patient. This information is necessary when determining the diagnoses for glaucoma and is needed to determine if a patient is a candidate for LASIK or cataract surgery.
A-SCAN
The A-Scan is necessary to determine if a patient is a candidate for cataract surgery.
